Have you ever wanted to run your own business? Or do you already have a start-up and need some help?
Then you should definitely try to attend the “StartUp Series” event that has been taking place at UIC HIT every Monday from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM till the end of July.
I have always had an interest in starting up a business and also wanted to see all the fuss about start-up companies nowadays. Sometimes it can be a make-or-break deal for your career. So when I saw this free opportunity I was really excited to learn and I am glad that I attended one.
This whole series consists of 10 different topics: Pathways to Market, Venture Validation, Forming a Company, Operating a Company, Funding Options, From friends, family, and fools to IPO, Accounting Basics, Venture Capital Overview, Management Team: Who do you want on your bus – and who should be driving? networking: Meet, talk, explore, engage as many people as you can, and finding your voice, and selling your story.
Each topic takes you from financial, legal, and business planning issues of the business. You are encouraged to ask questions during the presentation and legal experts in the Chicago area answer these questions.
The class that I attended was about how to operate a company and John Schreiner, attorney at Perkins Coie LLP, presented the class. It was a great start to learn about the people that run the companies whether it is a small business or a company. Most importantly you can learn the new vocabulary about business.
One new thing that I learned in the classes was the fact that there are various ways you can pay the employee to be with the business if you do not have the cash right now. You can give them equity in the business or issue different types of stock options with vesting agreements.
