Alex Estrada
Class of 2016
- Major: Finance
- Email: aestra24@uic.edu
- Company: Caterpillar
- Position: Corporate Finance Intern
Why did you choose your current position?
I thought this would be a great opportunity to work with a company that is diverse and is known to deliver a wide range of financial management around the world. I have always had an interest in energy, which led me to Caterpillar who has a reputation as a leading manufacturer of construction and mining equipment. Caterpillar has been around for a very long time and I can learn a lot from an experienced company.
Describe your new role?
My role is a corporate finance intern. I am hoping to learn how Caterpillar financially manages a multibillion-dollar company. I will be following other personnel who will guide me through their day-to-day duties.
How did you obtain your current position?
I applied for the position through UICCareers.com in late September and I was one of the seven students from UIC to interview for Caterpillar in October 2013.
What advice do you have for students currently searching for internships or full-time positions?
I would recommend for students to apply to as many opportunities possible in their field so that they may have the ability to choose one that best suits them. It benefits students to attend events that the university organizes. As well as attending events, it is also important to participate in university groups. I joined Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity and UIC String Ensemble to enhance my professional network. It is also helpful to have your resume and cover letter reviewed and critiqued prior to applying. I have had my resume reviewed by my family, other students, professors and other professionals for feedback. I feel that in order to grow as a young professional, it is important that we learn to accept feedback and criticism to succeed in the internships and positions we want to acquire.
