Introducing UIC Business Advisor Timothy Nemec

Timothy “Tim” Nemec has recently joined the UIC Business family. Working as an adviser, Tim is excited to help students achieve their academic goals. We caught up with the Chicago-area native as he gets settled into his new position:

Favorite Chicago Activities/Places: I love going outside of my comfort zone as often as possible! I enjoy taking Architecture tours of the city, exploring the museums, and visiting as many neighborhoods as I can! I also perform and write stand-up comedy, so I like to find myself at the Laugh Factory, Second City, and at various clubs around Chicago. I also really enjoy going to concerts. I’ve been going to Riot Fest since 2017 and will be going this year, so if you see me in a mosh pit, say hello!

Favorite Chicago Restaurants: My friends have a lot of dietary restrictions, so I’ve had a chance to explore and enjoy a lot of really great places. I love Pick Me Up Café in Wrigleyville and Native Foods when I’m craving something vegan, Dimo’s Pizza in Lakeview, Maison Marcel for good pastries, and 2Twenty2 on Wabash for a good burger and good company. I’m also not shy to say that sometimes, Wingstop wings delivered to your door is better than any restaurant.

Favorite Chicago Deep Dish: I will always say Lou Malnati’s

Favorite Netflix show? Lately, I’ve been watching more stand-up specials and rewatching all of John Mulaney’s specials, specifically Comeback Kid, which was recorded in Chicago.

Tell us a little about your personal/professional background?

I received my Masters in Education in Leadership within Educational Organizations from American Intercontinental University in December of 2018. As an undergraduate student, I originally attended Eureka College in Eureka, IL before transferring to The University of St Francis to completed my Bachelors of Arts in English Literature in May of 2017.

Professionally, during my undergraduate career, I worked a number of odd jobs but spent about 2 years at GameStop in various lower management roles until completing my degree. After finishing my undergraduate degree, I started at the Online Headquarters for Colorado Technical University in Schaumburg, IL, working as a Student Success Coach. I worked within that role for just about a year and a half.

What led you to UIC? While I was working in my previous role, and as I was completing research for my graduate program, I found myself really craving the community that only a ground campus can offer. Having just moved to Chicago in July of 2018, the idea of working and living in the city I loved was a dream. I was extremely fortunate to hear that a position at UIC Business was open, and knew that this role would help me foster the sense of community I was missing.

What are you most excited to do in your new role? I’m so excited to just MEET our students. Meeting students face to face, talking about their interests, and ensuring that I’m doing everything I can so they can be successful makes me ecstatic!

If you could give one piece of advice to all UIC Business students, what would it be? Your peers, classmates, friends, and advisers are your most valuable resources and the best team you could ask for! In the words of Amy Poehler’s bright-eyed and ambitious Parks and Recreation character, Leslie Knope, “…what makes work worth doing is getting to do it with people that you love.” As a student at UIC Business, you have a wealth of resources to explore and a mountain of work to tackle, but by doing it with people you trust and with people who trust you, this journey will be one to remember.
