Holiday Events Around Town

Finals week has come to an end, and while there wasn’t much of a chill in the air, nor really a single snowflake to be seen on campus, winter break is upon us, whether Chicago weather is with us or not. Here are some great ways to make use of all that free time:
Ice skating in the park
The quintessential winter activity. For the real skating-in-the-city experience, visit the McCormick Tribune rink on Michigan Ave. Twinkling lights in the trees, buildings rising up around you, and Anish Kapoor’s Cloud Gate reflecting it all. For wider views of the skyline and the lake, try the skating ribbon in Maggie Daley Park. Skate rentals are $12 and admission is free at both locations. Skating lessons are also available for those of you looking to perfect your figure eights!

Christkindlmarket
Fingers feel frozen after skating in the park? Walk over to Daley Plaza for some hot cider at Christkindlmarket! A German tradition in Chicago, the market offers delicious treats, beverages both hot and cold (sweet or sudsy), and a huge array of German gifts and souvenirs. Admission is free, so there’s no excuse to!

A Charlie Brown Christmas
From Daley Plaza, it’s a short ride on the CTA red line to Water Tower Place, where you can see a classic comic strip come to life: Broadway In Chicago and Emerald City Theatre present A Charlie Brown Christmas by Charles M. Schulz. It’s the perfect way to warm up inside after a chilly start to the day.

ZooLights at Lincoln Park Zoo
From Water Tower Place, hop on the #151 CTA bus and head north to Lincoln Park Zoo for ZooLights, one of the most dazzling Christmas light displays in Chicagoland. ZooLights has plenty of activities for kids and plenty of tasty beverages and romantic walks for adults. Grab a cup of hot chocolate and some roasted chestnuts and you’ll be on your way. The best part? It’s free!
