Fall 2016 Liautaud Courses: Applied Investment Management

Class registration for the fall semester is open, which means it’s time to make some tough choices. With such a wide selection of courses, it can be overwhelming to select the classes best suited to your needs. One of the hardest parts of the process is finding enough information on your different options. Liautaud students looking for finance courses might be interested in FIN 594, the Fall 2016 special topics course in finance.

This fall, FIN 594 will focus on applied investment management. Professor John Wightkin described the course as “hands-on portfolio management.” Wightkin himself has over 25 years of investment experience. After getting an MBA at Michigan in the late ‘80s, he moved on to investment and consulting work in the Chicago area, most recently for Charles Schwab.

Students in FIN 594 will have the opportunity to put financial theory to practice by experiencing firsthand the decisions that investment professionals make, including problems of stock selection and trading. Students will also have access to the most up-to-date portfolio management tools and investment technology. Topics covered will include different stock selection techniques and challenges to constructing and managing stock portfolios. Throughout, emphasis will be placed on linking the theoretical and practical aspects of the investment process.

Though the class is most relevant for Liautaud MSF students, Liautaud MBAs and other Liautaud students who want a footing in finance will find the course to be an invaluable primer in investment management. MBAs and other non-MSF students will leave the class with a grasp of finance and investment that will help them network outside of their own specialties and give them additional competence in their work as managers, marketers, accountants, and data analysts.

FIN 594 will be offered on Thursdays from 3:30pm to 5:50 p.m. For more information about UIC Liautaud programs, visit business.uic.edu.
