Exciting Changes in the UIC Business Career Center!

I wanted to take this opportunity to acknowledge the hard work and successes of my colleagues in career services. This is an exciting time of growth in career services for b-school students at the University of Illinois at Chicago. It is clear that Dean Michael Mikhail has made the expansion of career services as one of his major initiatives since taking over his role as the new Dean of the College of Business Administration within the past year.

Whether you’re already a student or just starting with us—here are just a few of the major changes taking place this year in career services that you need to know about.

We’ve opened a brand new Career Center in Douglas Hall! That’s right! The UIC Business Career Center is now conveniently located on the ground floor of Douglas Hall. You can stop in on your way to and from class to meet with a career adviser. State-of-the-art meeting space is available for employers to meet and interview our students throughout the year.

A new Career Adviser model focused on YOU. We have moved away from a generalist business adviser model and now have career advisers staffed that are field/area experts. Our advisers are well-versed in the hiring trends and market needs for specific areas such as accounting, marketing, management information systems, and so on. Students are now able to work with a specialized career adviser who can give targeted advice that will help them be well positioned in their chosen field.

A brand new Corporate Engagement team. We’ve hired new Corporate Engagement staff members who are dedicated to making connections with the business community for our students. Every day, our colleagues are out “pounding the pavement” making new employer connections and uncovering new career opportunities for our students.

Offering new career tools. We’ve recently purchased a suite of professional development videos from the top speakers in the field that are available to all of our students on-demand at any time. We are also exploring new technology that will allow our students to practice interviewing with a mock interview online platform that they can use from the comfort of their own home.

These are just a few of the exciting changes we have in store for our students, with many more on the way! For more information about what our career services can do for you, stop by Douglas Hall and meet with these folks or connect with me at our October information session next week to learn more.
