Beyond the Classroom – GMARK Volunteers at Lincoln Park Community Shelter

Thank you to GMARK Event Chairperson, Nilay Shah, for contributing this post.

The UIC Liautaud Graduate Marketing Association (GMARK) recently hosted a community service outing at the Lincoln Park Community Shelter (LPCS) to plan and prepare a hot meal for residents of the shelter.  We had a diverse group of people who volunteered their time including international and US students, both current and new, as well as Managerial Studies Assistant Professor Sophia Marinova.

The hustle around the kitchen provided a good setting to break the ice. Our menu included chicken ratatouille with vegetables over pasta, salad, garlic bread, and chocolate brownies for desert. While some students were chopping vegetables and others preparing the brownie mix, the conversation flowed in the background, making it an enjoyable environment to meet new people and network.

It was our first time having faculty join us at the service event, and we greatly appreciated Professor Marinova’s assistance at the stove!

Our Saturday outing was a fun event that also had a human touch to it. After all, being a business school student at Liautaud is more than just attending class. GMARK would like to sincerely thank all the volunteers from Liautaud who were kind enough to take some time out of their schedule and prepare a home cooked meal at the LPCS kitchen for the shelter residents.
