5 Tips to Keep your UIC Careers Profile Fresh Heading link
Quite often, you search for internships and jobs on UIC Careers. You find an opportunity that best meets your qualifications but somehow, you were passed up during the interview selection. Here are 5 tips to keep your profile fresh and relevant during the employer search.
- Update your contact information—you might miss out on a job opportunity, if an employer cannot contact you.
Make sure that the information in UIC Careers is as up-to-date as possible. Please be sure to list the best phone number and email address where you can directly be reached. The Business Career Center is here to assist with career resources available to you, but we need to be able to reach you! - Check your resume often—it’s never a bad idea to have more than one resume template.
The jobs that you are applying for are all different. Your resume should be the best example of who you are on paper. Be creative with the information that you want employers to know about you. Have a positive and negative scenario prepared for each job experience that you have listed. Make sure that your resume is relevant and focused! - Do you have a cover letter available—first impressions are lasting.
Sometimes a cover letter will be the first impression an employer has about you. It is a great idea to upload a cover letter that best exemplifies who you are and why YOU are the candidate they should choose. This is an excellent opportunity to toot your own horn about experiences, achievements, and skill sets that you have been able to acquire while you are here. It’s your time to shine so be confident! - Community Outreach and Professional Organizations—engage the employer beyond your schoolwork.
Start to see yourself as an asset. We know that you can tackle the rigorous coursework, but what have you done outside of class makes you the best. Join professional groups on sites like LinkedIn, update your resume to include community engagement, or seek opportunities at your job that allow you to work on team-led projects. Teamwork is character building; it’s time to set you apart from the rest! - Stop by and make an appointment—we are happy to assist you no matter where you are in this process.
