This Saturday, April 26, the Business Scholars took part in the 2014 Sarcoidosis 5K Run in the Lincoln Park Zoo area! This event was coordinated by one of the student organizations I am a part of called the Collegiate Association of Business Scholars, also known as CABS. CABS is one of the newer student organizations at UIC, which was recently launched in February. This student organization is for students within the Business Scholars Program, and one of CABS’s key missions is to give back to the community. The members of CABS decided to plan a day of service for all the Scholars so that everyone can get the chance to give back to our wonderful community.
Now, there is no better way of giving back than to help out with a good cause! By volunteering for the Sarcoidosis 5K run, the Business Scholars were able to make a difference in the community and spread awareness for an unfamiliar disease—Sarcoidosis. All proceeds raised went towards the Foundation for Sarcoidosis Research (FSR).
For those of you who don’t know, Sarcoidosis (pronounced SAR-COY-DOE-SIS) is a multi-system disease. This disease causes inflammation of the body tissues and the immune system does not function properly. The lymphocytes (a type of blood cell) becomes overactive and this causes masses of inflamed tissue to form in various organs of the body. Sarcoidosis is unpredictable and can be life-threatening. The Foundation of Sarcoidosis Research provides funding and collaboration for research on the understanding of Sarcoidosis so that a cure can be found.
The 5K race was a great way to spread Sarcoidosis awareness and to raise funds! Over 100 runners showed up and everyone was excited to be a part of such a memorable race.
In the end, the Business Scholars were all able to appreciate the value of serving our community!
