A Letter to Prospective Students

Dear Freshmen,

Last year, roughly around this time I ever so clearly remember when I first stepped into UIC’s campus for my Freshman Orientation. Boy, they are sure right when they say time flies. Frankly, I never anticipated UIC in my future and I have to admit, UIC was not even on my radar as a life-changing experience, which was my college application process. Applying to colleges was a daunting task, and I applied to many schools, not sure which one I would actually go to. Despite receiving my UIC acceptance letter in March, I had not yet decided if I wanted to attend until I got an email saying that I was selected to be part of the Business Scholars Program in late June.

What is shocking about the latter statement is that I would have never really considered making UIC my home for the next four years if it wasn't for that.  I applied to many schools my senior year of high school and I did the least research about UIC. Choosing what you want to do in college, and even deciding where you would like to go can be SO stressful, but I am here to tell you all that it is completely OK if you don’t have all the answers at the moment. You may even feel like your entire future depends on your decisions you make now, but I can confidently say that everything will come together when it’s the right time. There were many factors that played into my decision of choosing UIC, such as cost, majors offered, location, and school size. At the time, I had never felt so lost. Not knowing where I would end up was probably one of the scariest feelings I faced my senior year of high school, and I know exactly how it feels to be in your shoes.

I am happy with the decision I made about UIC, but to those of you that are reading this that are anxious about where you will be a year down the line, sit back and relax. Close your eyes, and take a deep breath because right now things may seem a little out of place.  Enjoy the moments as they come, and make the most of everything that you do. It’s quite funny how life always has a way of working itself out in ways you couldn’t ever imagine it to.

The point of applying to UIC is to give yourself the opportunity of a lifetime and open up so many doors for your future. I would not be here today if it wasn’t for my parent’s who encouraged me to do the best I can every step of the way. Today, I am going to be that person for you (future freshmen, I’m looking right at you). You can do it! So now, while you are enjoying your summer vacation, savor every bit it. Don’t let the pressure of the future weigh you down. That crazy thing called college may seem like it is approaching greatly in the distance or right over your shoulder, but don’t let that worry you.

Maybe sometimes, it’s those little opportunities that we were yearning for, such as getting a scholarship, or being part of a wonderful program that leads us to make our toughest decisions. If you get a wonderful opportunity, be sure to take it. Remember, you can do anything you put your mind to, and if you are like me, take life as it comes. Have a great day!

Until next time,

Mariya
